Dreamachine is a large-scale immersive artwork that creates vivid visual experiences behind closed eyes. Inspired by Brion Gysin's 1960s invention, the installation uses flickering light at specific frequencies to generate unique, kaleidoscopic patterns in each viewer's mind.
Working with large interdisciplinary team including Turner Prize-winning architects Assemble, neuroscientist Anil Seth, and composer Jon Hopkins, Whatever Together developed the technical systems that bring the experience to life. The studio built the embedded systems, lighting control software, and strobe sequencing that synchronise flickering light with 360-degree spatial sound across the circular installation. Whatever Together also designed custom tools for user testing and image capture.
The installation toured UK capital cities as part of Unboxed, the national cultural programme.
