Dreamachine

Explore the extraordinary potential of your mind

Collective Act Dreamachine Poster
WHAT IS IT?

Dreamachine is a major interdisciplinary programme designed to take audiences on an extraordinary journey into their own minds. Inspired by the work of artist-inventor Brion Gysin, the immersive experience is conjured by flickering white light and a bespoke score, giving rise to vivid visual experiences behind the closed eyes of the viewer and created entirely by their own brain.

Dreamachine was created and produced by Collective Act alongside a multidisciplinary team including Jennifer Crook, Assemble, Jon Hopkins, Holition, Professor Anil Seth, Dr David Schwartzman, Professor Fiona Mcpherson and Christopher Shutt. It is supported by the UK Government and was originally commissioned as part of UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK.

Dreamachine visited the four capital cities for the UK in 2022 and continues to tour. Find out more about Dreamachine here.

WHAT WE MADE

As Technical Director at Collective Act, Dev Joshi and the project team developed software products, lighting sequences and strobe control alongside embedded systems development for user testing, and imaging system integration as part of the wider user experience. Dev was part of the team which prototyped, developed and delivered the experience for its first tour in 2022 and has provided technical consultancy to the project in 2023.
